Fifth wheel trailers come in a range of sizes, suit a variety of budgets, and can provide travelers with great camping experiences. At some point, the time will come to say goodbye to your current fifth wheel. Whether you have a smaller trailer or a large toy hauler, there are a few things to consider when you decide it’s time to sell. To help, RVT has compiled a list of the five top tips for selling your used fifth wheel.
Research the Value of Your Fifth Wheel
Utilize online sources, such as RVT.com, to help you determine your fifth wheel’s value. Be sure to find makes and models that are the same or very similar to your fifth wheel, as the price could vary widely depending on length, make, model, and features. RVT’s price checker will simultaneously search the RVT and J.D. Power Guide databases to provide current pricing for your specific RV. Another helpful resource is the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA). Be sure to utilize multiple resources and do not rely solely on one source for your trailer’s value.
Clean and Organize Your Trailer
A clean, organized trailer is more appealing to buyers. If you have a large fifth wheel with features similar to a class A RV, you could stage the interior as you would when selling a used class A RV. If your trailer is smaller, you can maximize the space by keeping everything organized. Repair and upgrade any appliance or fixture that is damaged or broken. These improvements will significantly increase the value of your trailer.
Highlight Features and Target Your Audience
Since fifth wheels may vary dramatically in size and features, let buyers know your rig’s dimensions and point out any fixtures or furnishings that make your unit stand out. Be sure to include all relevant information about your fifth wheel, including the make, model, and year. If possible, locate the floorplan diagram of your trailer to help potential buyers to visualize the space and help them determine if the trailer is ‘right-sized’ for their needs. Take high-quality pictures of both the interior and exterior of the vehicle, as well as the hitch hookup. If possible, perform video walk-throughs of the entire living space. The more thorough you are in advertising your rig, the higher the chance of it being sold quickly.
Be Helpful and Transparent
A potential buyer may not have owned a fifth wheel before, so answering questions and being transparent about owning these types of trailers is beneficial if you want to make a faster sale. It may also be helpful to show these buyers how to hitch a trailer correctly and safely to a towing vehicle. If a buyer is seriously interested in purchasing your trailer, consider conducting a ride-along with your trailer attached. That way they get a firsthand feel for towing the trailer in their truck.
Additions for Negotiation
If you plan to negotiate with potential buyers, consider adding other accessories to the deal to encourage the sale. For instance, include accessories such as the trailer hitch, gear racks, or other equipment that were not included in your original offer. Some buyers may attempt to make a lowball offer, so be sure to have a basement price in mind that you will not go below. This is why having a clear grasp of your fifth wheel’s value will come in handy. A well-maintained trailer is highly desirable, so do not be afraid to say no to a prospective buyer that is unwilling to pay market value.
