According to new research from TechInsights, global smartphone shipments fell -19% YoY to 296 million units in Q4 2022. Apple topped the global smartphone market with an impressive 24% share in Q4 2022, the highest fourth quarter smartphone market share ever for the company. Samsung ranked in second place with 20% share, its highest fourth quarter performance since 2016. Xiaomi, OPPO (including OnePlus) and vivo stayed in the top five list.

On Feb 1, 2023 in San Francisco, Samsung unveiled its latest flagship Galaxy S23 series, which will hit the industry’s premium market.
All models are 5G-enabled with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Samsung installed, which makes the CPU, NPU, and GPU of S23 series 34%, 49% and 41% faster than S22’s.

Reduced manufacturing capacity at Foxconn factories amid China’s zero COVID policy (after rapid rise in COVID case there) primarily drove this decline. Xiaomi posted a soft quarter in Q4 2022. The Chinese vendor shipped 33.2 million units of smartphones globally, down -26% YoY. It is the fourth consecutive quarter that the vendor posted annual decline.
In addition to the mixed consumer demand, unfavourable economic conditions, and COVID-19 disruptions – the headwinds that the whole industry is facing, Xiaomi suffered greatly from inventory corrections which in turn dragged down its shipment performance significantly this quarter, especially in India and in China.
