JBS Collection
ELKHART, IN — The JBS Collection, represented by Laura and Jack Boyd Smith Jr. of Elkhart, Indiana, displayed their 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Pall Mall and earned both an individual Special Award and Second in Class honors at the 72nd edition of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Sunday, Aug. 20, on the famed 18th fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf Course in Pebble Beach, California.
The Ansel Adams Award—presented at the Pebble Beach Concours to the most desirable touring car of its era—was established in 1984 and is named after the world-renowned American photographer and environmentalist, who was an automobile enthusiast and a frequent Honorary Judge at Pebble Beach.

“Laura and I are very honored to win the 2023 Ansel Adams Award at Pebble Beach,” said Jack Boyd Smith Jr. “What made Adams one of the world’s best photographers was his combination of technical focus and attention to detail; elements that matter so much in the world of classic cars. That’s what this is all about, with every vehicle here—great care being put into the smallest of details. And with the help of our friends at LaVine Restorations we’ve done that with this vehicle. To get the Ansel Adams Award and Second in Class in a Rolls-Royce category with our Silver Ghost, right here at Pebble Beach—those are great achievements for The JBS Collection. It’s going to be a nice trip back to Indiana.”
Between 1920 and 1931, in an attempt to establish a plant in the United States, Rolls-Royce built 2,944 vehicles in Springfield, Massachusetts, including The JBS Collection’s 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, chassis No. 77JH, which features Springfield’s popular Pall Mall open body style and boasts of extremely rare dual-cowl/dual-windshield coachwork. The Silver Ghost line was named so due to the vehicle’s reputation for driving so quietly, and, overall, the American-made Springfields were thought by Rolls-Royce experts to have—compared to their British siblings—improved chassis and superior bodies.
The Pall Mall recently underwent an updated restoration at the skilled hands of LaVine Restorations, Inc.—of Nappanee, Indiana—that had been under wraps in prelude to Pebble Beach. LaVine Restorations has worked with The JBS Collection on a number of immaculate restorations, including a rare 1928 Hudson Model O Convertible Sedan and a heralded 1933 Chrysler Imperial LeBaron.

Best of Show at the 2023 Pebble Beach Concours was awarded to a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster—previously owned by the last Shah of Afghanistan—now owned by James Patterson (The Patterson Collection) of Louisville, Kentucky. First in Class in the Class H: Rolls-Royce Prewar went to a 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Torpedo Sports with Barker coachwork, owned by Bradley Greene of San Carlos, California.
