Travel trailers are one of the most popular types of RVs, ranging from the small and basic to the large and lavish. Millions of campers hit the highway every year with their bumper-pull rig, ready to enjoy the great outdoors.
If you’re a travel trailer owner, you will likely want to sell your rig at some point. You may want to upsize, downsize, buy a newer model, or switch to motorized RV. If the time has come to sell your travel trailer, RVT has five tips that will help you sell your unit for top dollar.
Determine the Value
With so many types of travel trailers available, from simple teardrop trailers to luxury rigs with multiple slideouts, the range in value is widespread. Check online marketplaces and use features like RVT’s price checker to get an idea of the market value of listings that are similar in type, age, and condition to your specific unit.
Make sure to have a bottom line, no matter what type of trailer you are selling. Set a reasonable price for your trailer and do not deviate too far from your price. Remember, you do not have to accept lowball offers.
Clean and Prepare the Trailer
Clean the trailer inside and out, making sure it is presentable for potential buyers. Repair any minor issues, such as broken lights or loose screws, and ensure all appliances are in good working order. Remove any items which are not included in the sale of the trailer, or clearly state in your ad that it is not included (e.g. a solar kit).
Take Good Photos
Whether you are selling a basic model or a more luxurious one, it is important to take clear, high-quality photos of the interior and exterior of the trailer. Be sure to highlight any unique features or upgrades. Photos of the hitch are also helpful. Additionally, take photos from various angles to give potential buyers a good sense of the trailer’s layout and condition. You may also want to consider including a video of the trailer actually being towed.
For special-purpose trailers such as toy haulers, potential buyers may want to visualize the space. Consider showcasing a few of your own ‘toys’ in your toy hauler’s garage, to give buyers a sense of what could fit. Remember to indicate that they are not included.
Advertise Effectively
Post your ad on popular online marketplaces like RVT.com. Creating more exposure for your rig will lead to a higher chance of it being sold quickly. Be sure to include all relevant information about the trailer, such as make, model, year, size, hitch/towing type, and condition, as well as any upgrades or features that may be attractive to buyers.
Be Honest and Transparent
Provide an honest description of the trailer’s condition, including any flaws or issues. If you have encountered any problems in the past, be upfront about all accidents or repairs the trailer has had, as this can help build trust with potential buyers. Likewise, keep the trailer clean and ready for showing at all times. Be prepared to answer questions about the trailer’s history, maintenance, and usage, and be willing to negotiate on price and be open to offers. Keep in mind, not all buyers will be familiar with hitching up and towing the trailer. Offering to teach a prospect or buyer how to do it may help seal the deal!
